An Introduction to Cyclocross: The Most Fun You Can Have on a Bike This Fall
As summer winds down and the air starts to cool, a different kind of cycling season begins: cyclocross.
If you’ve been hearing more about it locally, you’re not alone. Cyclocross has been steadily growing in popularity across the region, and more riders are discovering just how fun, challenging, and accessible it really is.

What is Cyclocross?
Cyclocross (or “CX”) is a form of bike riding and racing that takes place on short, mixed-terrain courses. Riders can expect a combination of:
grass
dirt trails
pavement
sand or mud (depending on conditions)
Courses are designed to be fast, technical, and repetitive, with multiple laps that keep the action close and engaging. Most races are between 30-60 minutes long.
One of the defining features of cyclocross is that riders often need to:
dismount and carry their bike over obstacles
navigate tight corners and off-camber terrain
handle changing surfaces and conditions
ride at a high effort level for shorter durations
It’s equal parts skill, fitness, and fun.
Why Cyclocross is Growing
Cyclocross continues to gain traction because it’s one of the most approachable cycling disciplines.
You don’t need a perfectly dialed race bike to get started. Many riders use:
gravel bikes
mountain bikes
older road bikes
dedicated cyclocross bikes
It’s less about equipment and more about participation.
It also has a strong community feel. Local races tend to be welcoming, energetic, and full of riders of all levels- from first timers to experienced racers.
Getting Started
If you’re curious about cyclocross, the best way to begin is simple:
ride off-road when you can
get comfortable with handling on grass or dirt
practice quick dismounts and remounts if you’re interested in racing
don’t overthink your setup—just get involved
Most riders are surprised by how quickly cyclocross becomes fun once they try it.
